Abstract

This article was written to commence a series sponsored by the Penny Stamps College of Art at University of Michigan on gentrification in Detroit. The article questions the thesis that artists are the leading edge of gentrification. Instead, it takes up the "rent-gap theory" of gentrification, which situates the phenomenon within a larger economic context of real estate values and capital's quest for increased returns on investment.
